Jointer-thicknessers: what the cutter block tells you

Planing width orders the field — 204 to 310 millimetres

Of all the figures on a planing machine, planing width is the only one all 21 machines define the same way: the maximum width faced flat in a single pass. It is reproducible and comparable across brands, which is why this overview sorts by it. It runs from 204 mm on the compact bench machines to 310 mm in the heavy floor-standing class.

Three size classes emerge. The 204 mm bench machines — Zipper ZI-HB204, Scheppach HMS850, Einhell TC-SP 204 and Atika ADH 204 — weigh 22 to 27 kg, run on 1,250 to 1,500 W from a household socket, and stand for narrow workpieces and occasional use. The 250 to 260 mm class is the field of the ambitious workshop: Scheppach HMS1080 (254 mm), Güde GADH 254, Jet JPT-10B, Record Power PT260, Metabo HC 260 C and, in cast-machine construction, the 173 kg Bernardo AD 260 (250 mm). Above that, at 300 to 310 mm, the heavy floor-standing class begins with the Bamato BHM-310PRO, the two Holzmann 305 models, the Zipper ZI-HB305 and the Hammer A3-31.

One value looks tempting but does not serve as a lead figure: the length of the jointer tables. It is stated inconsistently across makers — sometimes as one table half, sometimes as the total length — so the numbers do not rest on the same basis. As a rough guide: long jointer tables (Bernardo AD 260 at 1,090 mm, Holzmann HOB260ECOSMW2 at 1,085 mm, Hammer A3-31 at 1,400 mm) feed long boards more calmly, short ones (Scheppach HMS850) suit small workpieces. For the ordering, planing width counts; the head beneath it decides the quality.

Straight knives or a helical head — the fork behind finish, noise and price

Under the hood the machines part at one component: the cutter block. In the field, 15 carry a classic straight-knife block, 6 a helical head — and this difference affects the result more than any wattage.

The straight-knife block clamps two to four straight blades across the full width, in HSS or high-speed steel. This is the standard in the hobby field, cheap and clean in evenly grown wood. Its limits show on figured grain, knots and interlocked areas: there the straight edge tears out more readily. When a blade is blunt or nicked, the whole knife must be sharpened or replaced.

The helical cutter block solves the same problem differently. Instead of continuous knives, many small carbide inserts sit in a spiral around the block — 20 on the Holzmann HOB260ECOSMW2, 56 on the Bamato BHM-310PRO, and on the Hammer Silent-Power heads as carbide inserts. Because each insert engages at a slight angle, the block cuts by shearing rather than chopping: it runs quieter and tears out far less on difficult wood. When an insert goes blunt, you rotate it to a fresh edge instead of sharpening a knife. The price for that is the higher purchase — and usually a 400 V connection, because the helical heads sit in the heavier machines.

So anyone looking for the head with the biggest advantage should not look at the highest wattage but at the design — and at how much figured grain runs across the machine at their bench.

Four machines with both heads — the surcharge compared directly

How much the helical head costs is rarely clean to read off, because helical and straight-knife machines are often different models. In this field, however, four ranges exist in both versions — and there the surcharge for the head alone lies open.

Holzmann shows it most clearly on the 260 range: the HOB260ABS with two straight knives for 999 €, the HOB260ECOSMW2 with a helical head and 20 carbide inserts for 1,299 €. About 300 € separate them — the price of the quieter, lower-tear-out head. The 400 V helical version is currently listed as unavailable in the manufacturer’s shop; a 230 V version is listed separately.

The three further pairs confirm the pattern, even where a current price does not sit on both sides. Holzmann offers the 305 as the straight-knife HOB305PRO (four knives) and as the helical HOB305PROSMW2, the latter marked at 2,299 €. Bernardo sets the AD 260 with three straight HSS knives (1,288.06 €) beside the AD 260 S with a helical head. And Hammer builds the A3 platform as the “e-classic” with a straight-knife block or the “Silent-Power” with a helical head — the A3-31 Silent-Power stands at 3,473.61 € in the shop; at purchase it pays to check which version is ordered.

Unlike the plain straight-knife surcharge, on the Bamato BHM-310PRO the number of edges carries its own price: 56 carbide inserts across 300 mm width — the most documented cutting edges in the field — but at 3,299.00 € it sits in premium territory, not at the entry. The cheapest way into a helical head therefore remains the Holzmann HOB260ECOSMW2 at 1,299 € — four-figure, but only about 300 € over the straight-knife version.

Wattage is a manufacturer figure — mostly the power drawn, not delivered

Every box carries a wattage, and for the technically minded buying decision it is tempting. But it should be read with care: almost throughout it is the power drawn from the mains, not the power delivered at the block — and between the two lies the motor’s efficiency, which most data sheets leave unstated.

Only one brand states both separately: Metabo quotes 2,200 W drawn and 1,600 W delivered for the HC 260 C. Holzmann and Bernardo at least separate the duty types — continuous (S1) from the briefly higher peak (S6): the Holzmann HOB260ABS at 1,500 W (S1) and 2,100 W (S6), the Bernardo AD 260 at 2,000 W (S1) and 2,800 W (S6). A comparison that simply sets 1,500 W against 3,000 W throws these quantities together.

What the figure does reveal is the connection class. The 230 V machines sit between 1,250 W (Zipper ZI-HB204, Scheppach HMS850) and 2,000 W (Bernardo AD 260); the 400 V three-phase machines reach up to 3,000 W on the Hammer A3-31. We therefore carry motor power as a manufacturer figure with this note and do not rank by it.

Thicknessing height, depth of cut, weight — what reaches the workpiece and the workshop

Beyond width and head, three values decide the daily work.

The maximum thicknessing height sets how thick a board still passes through the thicknesser. The bench machines cap at 120 mm, the floor-standing class goes markedly higher — 185 mm on the Bernardo, 195 mm on the Holzmann HOB260ECOSMW2, 225 mm on the Bamato BHM-310PRO and the Hammer A3-31. Flat boards are fine at 120 mm; anyone working squared timber or glue-laminated blocks needs the larger opening.

The maximum depth of cut says how much material a pass removes — usually more when jointing than when thicknessing. The bench machines take 2 mm (Scheppach; Zipper 1.5 mm thicknessing), the floor-standing class more: Bernardo 3 mm when jointing, Hammer 4 mm, and the no-longer-available Scheppach Plana 3.0c at 5 mm, the highest value in the field. More depth of cut means fewer passes to the target dimension, not a better finish — that comes from the last, fine cut.

Weight separates the build types most clearly: from 22 kg (Scheppach HMS850) through the 71 kg floor class (Metabo HC 260 C) to 173 kg (Bernardo AD 260). Heavy is a virtue here — mass damps vibration and keeps long boards calm — but it ties up fixed floor space. A bench machine can be put away; a 173 kg machine stays where it stands.

Cutter-block speed — why helical heads run slower

On cutter-block speed the bench machines seem to lead: 8,500 to 9,000 min⁻¹ on Scheppach, Einhell, Atika and Jet, against about 4,000 min⁻¹ on the heavy Bernardo, Holzmann helical and floor-standing machines. But this is no quality gradient, it is design. A helical or large straight-knife block has a markedly larger diameter than the slim block of a 204 mm bench machine; at the same speed the cutting speed at its circumference would be far higher, so it turns slower. The lower figure on a 400 V floor-standing machine therefore does not mean “weaker” — setting it against the 9,000 min⁻¹ of a bench machine is misleading.

The figure also varies by source within one machine: for the Güde GADH 254 one shop states 8,500, the manufacturer’s own site 9,000 min⁻¹. Where the values diverge, that is noted at the number.

Prices — 238 to 3,474 euros, each with its source and retrieval date

Eleven of the machines come with a price we can point to, each entry naming the shop and the day it was read off. At the entry stand the 204 mm bench machines: Zipper ZI-HB204 at 238.00 € (the lowest price in the field), Scheppach HMS850 at 264.99 €, Einhell TC-SP 204 at 349.95 €. The 254 class follows with the Scheppach HMS1080 at 369.99 € and the Güde GADH 254 at 395.00 €.

Above that the machine class begins: Holzmann HOB260ABS (straight knives) at 999.00 €, Bernardo AD 260 at 1,288.06 €, Holzmann HOB260ECOSMW2 (helical) at 1,299.00 €. At the top rank the helical upper class and the premium field: Holzmann HOB305PROSMW2 at 2,299.00 €, the Bamato BHM-310PRO with 56 inserts at 3,299.00 € and the Hammer A3-31 with its “Silent-Power” head at 3,473.61 €.

Such a price describes one seller on one day and may differ tomorrow; the figure that applies now sits on the offer itself, reachable through the buy link. On the Bamato BHM-310PRO, the Bernardo AD 260 and the Hammer A3-31 a higher starting price stands beside it; as long as the lowest figure over the last 30 days is not evidenced, we leave the difference out of any saving claim (§ 11 PAngV).

From the bench machine to the workshop machine — which class suits whom

Before turning to the matrix, a rough sorting of the field into four camps helps.

Compact bench machines (204 mm, 22 to 27 kg, 230 V, straight knives). Zipper ZI-HB204, Scheppach HMS850, Einhell TC-SP 204 and Atika ADH 204. They stand for occasional use on narrow workpieces, can be stowed away, and cost the least. The right size for a picture frame or a small shelf; on wide, figured planks they reach their limit.

Semi-pro of the 254 to 260 mm class (straight knives). Scheppach HMS1080 (online bestseller, 369.99 €), Güde GADH 254 (395.00 €, five-year manufacturer warranty), Jet JPT-10B, Record Power PT260 and the heavy Metabo HC 260 C with a cast-iron thicknessing table (71 kg, the only one with a stated delivered power). More width, more mass, longer tables — the working field of the ambitious workshop.

Heavy floor-standing class (250 to 305 mm, mostly 400 V). Bernardo AD 260 (173 kg, 230 V, currently only a few in stock), Holzmann HOB260ABS and the HOB305 line, Zipper ZI-HB305. Built for continuous work and wide planks; the no-longer-available Scheppach Plana 3.0c belongs here too as a market reference.

Helical head from entry to premium. At the low end the Holzmann HOB260ECOSMW2 (20 inserts, 1,299 €), above it the Holzmann HOB305PROSMW2 (2,299 €) and the Bernardo AD 260 S, at the top the Bamato BHM-310PRO (56 inserts, 3,299 €) and the Hammer Silent-Power machines. Here you pay for a quiet, low-tear-out cut and for rotating individual inserts instead of sharpening knives.

For a lone worker with occasional need, a 173 kg floor-standing machine is oversized — it pays off through usage frequency and volume of wood, not through the spec list. Conversely, a 25 kg bench machine reaches its limit on figured hardwood, where a helical head makes the difference.

What jointing and thicknessing actually mean

For anyone standing before a first purchase, it helps to look at the two work steps these machines combine. Rough, saw-cut timber is rarely straight: boards are warped, twisted or bowed. Jointing creates the basis — a face is planed fully flat over the jointer tables, and a square edge is formed against the fence. The workpiece then has two clean reference faces.

Thicknessing builds on that: the board runs flat-side down over the thicknessing table, and the cutter block planes the top face parallel to it, down to a set dimension. Run several boards through in turn and they all come out the same thickness — the prerequisite for gluing them up cleanly.

A combined jointer-thicknesser handles both steps with one cutter block. Reconfiguring between the functions — folding up the jointer tables, moving the fence aside, repositioning the dust extraction — takes a few moves, but saves space, money and a second motor against two separate machines. This comparison looks at the machines’ technical data; how fine the result turns out in the end also depends on the depth setting, the feed and the wood.
