Wallbox comparison 2026: 24 charging stations checked
A wallbox (EV home charging station) is not a plug but an appliance on the power grid — one an electrician must register and, from 22 kW, have approved. So before you buy, three questions matter more than the price: Can your house service connection handle 11 or 22 kW? Is the box controllable under § 14a EnWG — the German grid-operator curtailment rule, mandatory since 2024 so the grid operator may throttle it during a bottleneck? And do you want to bill the charged electricity, say to an employer or a tenant — then a calibrated meter is required, otherwise not. Whoever settles this beforehand buys once instead of twice. We checked 24 devices on exactly these points — every statement sourced, and where a manufacturer stays silent, an honest "in Prüfung" (under review) stands in place of a promise.

Every figure is taken from a manufacturer datasheet or a retailer listing, logged with its source and the date of retrieval. Statements on § 14a conformity and calibration law appear only where the manufacturer documents them explicitly — otherwise the entry reads “in Prüfung” (under review). What surfaces first up top is set by your filters, not our revenue.
Filtering down to the right box
Fix your own constraints at the top — power, § 14a control, calibration law, bidirectional — and the boxes that fit are what is left. Three points to note before you filter:
The § 14a footnote. “Controllable” does not automatically mean ”§ 14a-compliant”. What matters is whether the grid operator can throttle the box when needed — via EEBUS, Modbus or a control input. Where the manufacturer does not explicitly document this, this page shows “under review”, not “yes”.
The calibration-law line. A simple internal meter is fine for private use. As soon as you bill an employer or tenants, you need an MID meter or the calibration-law variant — a difference the price tag seldom reveals.
The bidirectional entry. Only a few devices in the field can feed power back into the house (V2H). If you are eyeing this, check vehicle compatibility first — the box alone is not enough.
Bidirectional charging: your car as the biggest electricity storage in the house
Bidirectional charging means that electricity flows not only into the car battery but also back out — into the house (called V2H, vehicle-to-home) or even into the public grid (V2G, vehicle-to-grid). Put simply: your EV sits idle most of the time while carrying around a battery that is often five to ten times larger than a typical home solar battery. Bidirectional charging makes that battery usable without hanging a second, expensive battery on the wall.
The remarkable part: this is not a technical breakthrough but a regulatory one. The technology has existed for years — in Japan, the Nissan Leaf has long charged this way. In Germany it has so far failed not on the devices but on the rules: fed-back electricity was treated, for tax and grid fees, as if you were buying it twice. That made the whole thing uneconomical. Since 2026, these double grid fees on fed-back power are gone — the moment bidirectional charging pays off for the first time. That is why the first market-ready devices are arriving now (such as the Wallbox Quasar 2, Ambibox, E3/DC) — the “bidirectional” filter shows them.
What you get out of it, concretely:
- Higher self-consumption: you charge the car at midday with the surplus from your solar system and take the electricity back out in the evening, instead of buying it expensively from the grid.
- No second storage unit needed: the car battery replaces the 5,000–10,000 € home battery — it is already there.
- Backup power during an outage: if the grid goes down, the car can supply the house for hours to days.
- Earning money down the line (V2G): if you return electricity to the grid at peak times, that can turn into remuneration — this market is only just emerging.
In all honesty: it remains an early market in 2026. You need three things that must fit together — a car that can do it (still few models), a bidirectional wallbox (more expensive than a normal one) and the matching tariff. For most people, the classic box is still the sensible buy today; but if you are planning from scratch and want to buy the future along with it, look for “bidi-ready” — and check whether it is a documented commitment or just a marketing promise without a date.
What buyers report
For 9 of the 24 devices, customer reviews with a traceable source are available (customer opinions on Testbericht.de and Geizhals respectively, as of 20.07.2026 — linked directly on each product card). The remaining 15 simply have no review base yet: they are sold through specialist partners or are only just entering the market as bidirectional newcomers. That is not a verdict, just a gap in the data.
The most striking pattern in the field: the rating is almost never decided by charging power, but by software and connectivity. They can all charge — what makes owners unhappy are dropped connections, app trouble and hard-to-reach support.
The front runners: the Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 stands at 5.0 out of 5 stars (10 reviews), the Amperfied connect.home at 4.7 stars — with 23 reviews the broadest data base in the field — and the Heidelberg Energy Control at 4.5 stars (9 reviews). The go-e Gemini 2.0 and the Easee Home also show 5.0 stars, but from only 3 and 1 review respectively — the values speak for them, but the base is too thin for a verdict.
Where it grates — and why:
- Wallbox Pulsar Plus (3.2 ★, 9 reviews): buyers praise the compact housing and the app — but repeatedly criticise dropping Wi-Fi connections (there is no wired network port), a tight wiring compartment for 22 kW cabling, and hard-to-reach support.
- Elli Charger Pro (3.0 ★, 4 reviews): after a clean installation, reviewers report it runs without issues — but also reported are LAN connection losses with offline states, RFID cards that fail without an online check, and boilerplate support replies. Four reviews are few; the direction is consistent, and we flag the thin base explicitly.
- Vestel EVC04 (3.7 ★, 9 reviews): the most polarising device — six times 5 stars (runs reliably for months, uncomplicated operation) against three times 1 star (a fiddly app with weak consumption analytics, compatibility problems with individual vehicle models among other things, and an awkward software setup). If you are after a no-frills box without app ambitions, you will read different experiences here than a smart-home user.
What this means for your purchase: alongside the datasheet values, check the connectivity for your setup — if the box will sit in the Wi-Fi dead spot of your garage, a device with a wired port is the safer choice. And sort the comparison above by rating: the “Bewertung” (rating) slider hides devices without a review base.
Frequently asked questions
What does § 14a EnWG mean for my wallbox?
Since 2024, charging devices above 4.2 kW must be capable of being throttled by the grid operator when needed (grid-oriented control). Technically this runs via EEBUS, Modbus or a control input. Make sure the manufacturer explicitly states § 14a capability — "smart" or "app-controllable" alone is no proof.
Do I need a calibration-law (Eichrecht)/MID meter?
Only if you want to bill the charged electricity in a legally sound way — say to an employer (company car) or to tenants. For pure private use, the simple internal meter is enough. MID (Measuring Instruments Directive) is the baseline; full German calibration-law compliance often comes only in a special variant of the box.
Are 11 kW enough, or do I need 22 kW?
For most electric cars, and charging overnight, 11 kW is comfortably enough. 22 kW only helps if your vehicle accepts 22 kW three-phase (many cannot) and your house service connection supports it. In Germany, 22 kW boxes additionally require grid-operator approval; 11 kW boxes only need to be registered.
Bidirectional charging — what really works in 2026?
Feeding power back into your own house (V2H) is technically possible with a few devices and matching vehicles; the double grid fees on fed-back power have been abolished since 2026. It remains an early market: few boxes, high prices, vehicle compatibility to be checked carefully. The "bidirectional" filter shows the candidates.
Does an electrician have to install the wallbox?
Yes. Connecting a wallbox to the 400-volt grid is reserved for certified specialist contractors in Germany (DIN VDE 0100-722), and above 11 kW the installation requires grid-operator approval. An incorrectly installed or unregistered wallbox can cost you insurance cover and warranty.
