Massage guns: stroke length decides, not strikes per minute

The stroke indicates working depth — from three sources of differing reliability

Amplitude, often called “stroke” on the data sheet, is the distance the massage head travels forward and back with each strike. No other published value indicates so directly how deep the percussive movement reaches into tissue. That is why the stroke leads this overview. It spans from 6 mm on the BLACKROLL Fascia Gun to 16 mm on the large Theragun models, the Achedaway Pro and the Compex Fixx 2.0; budget and drugstore devices mostly sit between 8 and 12 mm.

Clear as that order looks, the numbers behind it differ in how solid they are. Three origins run side by side in the field, and they are not equal:

Stated by the manufacturer. BLACKROLL (6 mm), Beurer MG 180 (10 mm), NAIPO Pro (10 mm), the Flow Pro (14 mm) and the RENPHO R3 Power (12 mm) state the stroke themselves. That is the most reliable basis, because the manufacturer puts its name to it.

Independently measured. On the three Bob and Brad devices the figure comes not from the manufacturer but from a measurement by massagegunadvice.com: C2 8.5 mm, Q2 Mini 7.57 mm, X6 Pro 9.98 mm. Such measured values are often closer to reality than the marketing — but they are not the factory figure.

Derived from the model class. The 16 mm of the large Theragun devices is the well-known Therabody standard stroke, though not printed on the German product page. Likewise the values for Achedaway Pro and Compex Fixx 2.0 (16 mm each), Opove M3 Pro Max (15 mm), Urikar Pro 3 (14 mm) as well as Ekrin B37, Mebak 3 and Toloco (12 mm each) rest on test and trade sources, not on a manufacturer data sheet.

And then there is Hyperice: for the entire Hypervolt line — Go 3, 3 and 3 Pro — the manufacturer states no stroke officially. Third parties estimate it at 12 to 14 mm, but on these three devices the field stays empty rather than adopt an outside estimate as fact. A missing stroke here does not mean “shallow”, simply “not published”. We never place a factory figure next to a third-party measurement as if both stood on the same footing — the origin sits on every number.

Why 3,900 strikes per minute do not mean more force

The second spec is the strike frequency, and its dividing line runs differently than expected. Premium devices run low and strong — Theragun 1,750 to 2,400, Hyperice 1,500 to 2,500 strikes per minute — while budget and drugstore models go higher: up to 3,200 on RENPHO R3, Beurer MG 180 and Bob and Brad, up to 3,600 on the Urikar Pro 3, and up to 3,900 on the Medisana MG 500, the highest in the field. A high frequency is therefore no mark of quality. It works only together with the stroke: a short stroke at high speed feels buzzy, a long stroke at moderate speed feels forceful.

Beware the step count that gets advertised so readily. The Urikar Pro 3 quotes 30 speed steps, most other devices three to six. That says nothing about the range, only into how many increments the same span is divided. Where that range begins and ends is what matters — not into how many notches it breaks.

Pressure resistance: the one value that separates — and how optimistic it comes out

There is a value that genuinely distinguishes massage guns: the stall force, the pressure at which the motor stalls under load. It decides whether a device works through firm pressure or bogs down. It is solid where an independent measurement backs it — and this is exactly where manufacturer figures come out most optimistic.

The Achedaway Pro is advertised at 80 lbs; a third-party measurement arrives at 60 to 65. The Bob and Brad X6 Pro quotes 55 lbs; measured (massagegunadvice.com) it is around 40. The Mebak 3 lists 53 lbs (about 24 kg) as a pure manufacturer figure. On top of that the units switch from device to device — sometimes kilograms, sometimes pounds, sometimes newtons — which further complicates a direct comparison.

On the more solid side stand figures with clear attribution: Theragun PRO around 60 lbs (about 27 kg / 267 N), Ekrin B37 56 lbs (about 25 kg / 249 N), RENPHO R3 Active around 23 kg (226 N), BLACKROLL 22 kgf (216 N), Theragun Relief around 20 lbs (about 9 kg / 89 N). Where a manufacturer — as Hyperice across the whole Hypervolt line — states no value, we show none either. We carry stall force only as a manufacturer figure with a caveat, never rank by it, and use the lower number where measurements differ.

From the 400-gram mini to 1.4 kilos: weight, battery and heat heads

Beyond working depth, handling decides whether a device gets used day to day or ends up in a drawer.

Weight and form. The field splits into mini devices around 400 g (Theragun mini and NAIPO Mini Pro at 400 g each, Bob and Brad Q2 Mini at 430 g) and full size. Heaviest are the large full-size devices around 1.4 kg, led by the Beurer MG 180 at 1,420 g factory figure. Anyone guiding the gun over their own back at arm’s length feels every gram — for the legs or the shoulder it barely matters.

Battery. Here the field has shifted: four devices let you swap the battery instead of waiting for a charge. The Theragun PRO ships with two exchange packs, the Achedaway Pro with a swappable 3,200 mAh cell, the Compex Fixx 2.0 with an exchangeable Li-Po pack and the Flow Pro with a swap-battery option. The other 28 charge a fixed cell. Runtime runs from about 1.5 h (Medisana MG 500) to 15 h (BLACKROLL, explicitly speed-dependent); in between sit, for example, the Cotsoco at up to 12 h and the Ekrin B37 at up to 8 h.

Heat and cold. A growing part of the field adds temperature. The Medisana MG 600 works with a hot-and-cold Peltier element, the HoMedics Pro Physio with a heat head (47 °C) and a cool-gel head, the RENPHO R3 Active with a heat and a cold head, Hyperice with a heated attachment and the Urikar Pro 3 with a heated grip. That is a comfort function, not an argument for more depth.

Quiet is a claim, not a standardised measurement

A dB value sits on only part of the devices, and the conditions behind them are inconsistent. Only Hyperice states them throughout: 48 dB on the Hypervolt 3, 51 dB on the 3 Pro, 55 dB on the Go 3. In the budget field, makers name thresholds — Bob and Brad Q2 Mini under 30 dB, Flow Pro under 40 dB, NAIPO Pro under 43 dB, RENPHO R3 Power around 50 dB at 10 to 15 cm, Medisana MG 600 under 60 dB at 50 cm. Because the measuring distances differ, these numbers cannot be set against each other. Therabody only describes its devices as quiet (“QuietForce”) without naming a figure. A noise ranking across the whole field could at best be faked from that.

App, attachments, warranty: what decides daily use

App control with guided programmes and a pressure indicator comes from the three premium houses Therabody, Hyperice and BLACKROLL — but by now from two budget brands too: RENPHO runs the R3 Active through the RENPHO app, Flow the Pro through a recovery app. The other devices manage with a display on the housing, from the LED touch panel on Bob and Brad through the OLED on Opove to the LCD on Sportstech and Cotsoco.

The number of attachments runs from 2 (Theragun Prime, Hypervolt Go 3) to 12 (Cotsoco), with the Toloco EM26 at 10. More attachments means more choice of head shapes, not more power. On warranty it is above all the German and the specialist brands that go beyond the statutory guarantee: Beurer commits to three years (MG 180 and MG 99), the Medisana MG 600 to three as well, the Ekrin B37 even to a lifetime warranty (manufacturer statement), NAIPO to two years with an extension option. Compex, HoMedics and Therabody name two years.

What the customer ratings give us

For 18 of the devices there is an Amazon.de customer rating, and they come out close together: all between 4.0 and 4.7 stars (as of 22 July 2026, verifiable at the listing). Most telling are high grades on a broad base. The Bob and Brad Q2 Mini stands at 4.7 stars from 14,469 ratings, the C2 at 4.7 from 9,000, the RENPHO R3 Active at 4.6 from 16,165 and the Mebak 3 at 4.5 from 17,883 — the largest count in the field. The Bob and Brad X6 Pro (4.6 from 1,850) and the Beurer MG 99 (4.3 from 1,722) rest on solid numbers too.

A high grade on a thin base weighs less. The Hyperice Hypervolt 3 Pro reaches 4.7 stars, but only from 27 ratings; the Theragun PRO stands at 4.2 from 74. At the lower edge sits the Medisana MG 500 at 4.0 stars from 120 ratings. A grade alone does not carry the decision — only together with its count. That is why each device shows both: the star value and the number of ratings, each with a link and retrieval date.

Prices: 25 with retailer and retrieval date

25 of the devices carry a documented price, each with source and retrieval date on the card. From the manufacturer shops come, among others, BLACKROLL Fascia Gun 119.92 €, Theragun Prime 319 €, Hypervolt 3 249 €, Medisana MG 500 59.99 €, NAIPO Pro 99.99 € and RENPHO R3 Active 74.99 €. From specialist retailers come Theragun PRO 599 € (fitshop.de), Beurer MG 180 136.38 € (baur.de), Beurer MG 99 58.99 € (saturn.de), Klarfit Tofta 162.99 € (mediamarkt.de), RENPHO R3 Power 97.96 € (jacob.de) and the Sportstech MGUN100 from 54.90 € (kaufland.de). Among the brands listed on Amazon.de sit, for instance, Bob and Brad C2 99.99 €, Q2 Mini 59.99 €, X6 Pro 149.99 €, Urikar Pro 3 109.99 € and Mebak 3 119.99 €.

A price is a snapshot: it holds for the retailer and the day we retrieved it, and may be a different one tomorrow. Read the current state at the retailer via the purchase link — the retrieval date sits on every card. On the BLACKROLL price the shop runs a higher struck-through figure; without a 30-day best-price record we do not present it as a discount (§ 11 PAngV).

Four camps in the field — and the Stiftung Warentest verdict

The 32 devices sort, before the comparison, roughly into four camps.

Premium with an app ecosystem: Therabody/Theragun (16 mm stroke, swappable battery on the PRO, 149 € on the Relief to 599 € on the PRO), Hyperice/Hypervolt (noise stated throughout at 48 to 55 dB, 149 to 349 €) and the BLACKROLL Fascia Gun (119.92 €, app, Stiftung Warentest winner). Here you pay for build quality, app control and brand support.

Budget via online retail: RENPHO, Bob and Brad (LED touch, the highest rating counts in the field), NAIPO, Mebak, Urikar (heated grip, 30 steps), Toloco, Opove, Cotsoco, Sportstech and Klarfit. Plenty of features for the money, but less often a manufacturer-stated stroke or dB value.

Drugstore and health, the German brands: Beurer (three-year warranty, LED), Medisana (from 59.99 €, hot-and-cold variant MG 600) and HoMedics (heat and cool-gel head). Clearly declared key data, but shorter runtimes and mostly no app.

Specialist and physio corner: Compex Fixx 2.0 (rotating head, swappable battery), Ekrin B37 (56 lbs, lifetime warranty), Achedaway Pro (80 lbs) and Flow Pro (14 mm, under 40 dB) — strong devices, some available only via import or specialist trade.

There is an independent verdict on top: Stiftung Warentest examined eleven massage guns in test 07/2024; the BLACKROLL Fascia Gun was the test winner with a grade of 2.7 (test.de). That is an outside verdict, not our own — and a telling detail sits beside it: this very device has, at 6 mm, the shortest stated stroke in the field. Working depth is only one axis; handling, noise and build quality count in the test too.

What a percussion gun does — and when it should stay down

A massage gun produces a fast, pinpoint tapping motion; hence the name percussion device. Described technically: a motor drives a head forward and back at the stated frequency and amplitude, usually for use on large muscle groups such as thighs, calves, back and shoulders. What such a device does in the body depends on use and person and is not the subject of this comparison — the technology is compared, not the effect.

The other side matters just as much. Manufacturer safety instructions draw the same limits across all brands: percussion devices do not belong on fresh injuries, inflammation or varicose veins, not with a tendency to thrombosis, not during pregnancy, and not directly on bones, joints, the neck or the head. In doubt, seek medical advice before use. These notes appear in the manuals — they are not fine print but part of the buying decision.
