Comparison
Commercial fridges from 229 to 1,096 litres: 26 models
The right commercial refrigerator is the one that fits your operation: enough net capacity for your throughput, the right Klimaklasse (climate class) for the warmest corner of the installation site, and the right door type — at a price that matches the equipment. The 15 devices in this comparison range from 229 litres (NordCap COOL-LINE RC/RCX 400 GL, Klimaklasse 3) to 1,096 litres (Liebherr FRPSvg 1402); 14 are solid-door storage cabinets, and the only glass door for presentation is the Liebherr FRFCvg 6511. Prices run from around 922 € (NordCap COOL-LINE RC 400 GL, net 775 € excl. VAT, calculated gross) to 5,143 € (Liebherr FRPSvg 1402). The most frequently overlooked buying column is the Klimaklasse: a Klimaklasse 3 device holds its temperature only up to 25 °C ambient, a Klimaklasse 5 device up to 40 °C — in a hot kitchen that is the difference between reliable and failed. Electricity consumption (in the field around 180 to 998 kWh per year) is stated on every datasheet; over the operating life it makes a moderate difference, which you can work out for your own electricity price with the optional calculator below if you wish. We checked every device on these values — net capacity, Klimaklasse, door type, refrigerant, consumption and price, with a source and retrieval date for every statement. Where a manufacturer states no consumption value, the device does not appear in this table.
Estimate electricity cost (optional)
A secondary factor — for commercial fridges, features, capacity and value matter more. If you like, convert the power draw into euros here.

No devices match this selection. Loosen filters
Every line rests on the manufacturer datasheets, the EU product fiches, the official Energielabels (EU energy labels) and the retailer listings — origin and retrieval date sit on each individual value. A device only made the table if its annual consumption is documented; no kWh figure, no row. The ordering answers your filters, not our commission.
Getting to the right cabinet
Set the top filters to what your operation actually needs — net capacity, Klimaklasse (climate class), door type, consumption — and the list narrows to the devices that suit it. Three things worth knowing first:
Net capacity and Klimaklasse first. Does the volume fit your throughput, and does the Klimaklasse carry your warmest operating hour? That decides which devices are candidates at all — sort by price, equipment and consumption only within that selection.
Klimaklasse against the installation site. A cheap device is no good if it gets too warm in your kitchen. Class 3 means 25 °C, class 5 means 40 °C ambient. That is why the column is deliberately part of the comparison.
Net is not gross. Four prices are net B2B offers excl. VAT. We mark them and state the calculated gross value alongside — so you compare like with like.
Net capacity and door type: the right device for your operation
The first question is not the price but the size. The 15 cabinets range from 229 litres net capacity (the two compact NordCap COOL-LINE RC/RCX 400 GL) to 1,096 litres (Liebherr FRPSvg 1402, a two-door cabinet for high-volume kitchens). In between, the bulk of the single-door devices sit around 420 to 500 litres — the typical size for a restaurant, café or butcher. Reckon from throughput: a cabinet you have to reorganise twice a day is too small; one that runs half-empty wastes floor space and purchase cost.
The door type is the second fork in the road. 14 of the 15 devices are solid-door storage cabinets — the tight, insulated door keeps the cold inside and is the right choice wherever no one looks in. Only one device in the field has a glass door: the Liebherr FRFCvg 6511. It makes the goods visible and belongs in the sales area or self-service, not in the storeroom (more on this below).
On the rest of the equipment the cabinets are close together, which makes the choice easier: all 15 cool with forced air (Umluft) — standard for storage cabinets, because the air distributes the temperature evenly inside. All use natural refrigerants (R290 or R600a) and are plug-and-play, so they can be installed without a refrigeration certificate. Some devices are built for GN gastronorm containers — for example the NordCap KU 703 for GN 2/1 — which simplifies loading with the standardised trays from the kitchen.
On price, a second look pays off: the range runs from around 922 € (NordCap COOL-LINE RC 400 GL, calculated gross from 775 € net) to 5,143.18 € gross (Liebherr FRPSvg 1402). What you get for the money depends less on litres than on Klimaklasse, build quality and brand — a cheap Klimaklasse 3 cabinet and a tropics-capable Klimaklasse 5 cabinet of the same size are simply not the same product. How to compare net and gross cleanly is explained further below.
Klimaklasse: the column for the hot kitchen
The Klimaklasse (climate class) is the most frequently overlooked buying column. It states up to which ambient temperature the manufacturer guarantees cooling performance: class 3 up to 25 °C, class 4 up to 30 °C, class 5 up to 40 °C. If it gets warmer at the installation site, the compressor works harder, consumption rises, and in the extreme case the target temperature is no longer held.
In a professional kitchen next to stove, oven and fryer, 32 to 38 °C are not unusual. There a class 3 device is under-specified. In the field this affects the two cheapest cabinets, the NordCap COOL-LINE RC 400 GL and RCX 400 GL: their label classifies them for 25 °C ambient — solid for a cool storeroom or counter area, but not rated for the hot kitchen. KBS reaches class 4 (30 °C) — as does the Liebherr FRFCvg 6511 glass-door model per its Energielabel; the Liebherr solid-door models, the Polar U-Series and the NordCap KU Premium reach class 5 (40 °C, tropics-capable). Choose the class by your warmest operating hour, not by the annual average.
Glass door or solid door — presentation versus cooling performance
A glass door makes the goods visible and sells. But it costs electricity, and considerably so. Glass insulates worse than an insulated solid door, and heat enters through the pane. How large the surcharge is shows especially cleanly in the comparison within an identical housing, because there everything except the door is the same.
The Liebherr FRFCvg 6501 (solid door) and the FRFCvg 6511 (glass door) share exactly the same housing at 747 × 769 × 2018 mm and the same forced-air cooling. The solid-door cabinet consumes 635 kWh/a, the glass-door cabinet 984 kWh/a — a surcharge of around 55 %, for the view alone. Over ten years at 16 cents/kWh, that is around 560 € in extra cost.
The conclusion is not one against glass doors, but one for the right use: where customers and guests see the goods and buy more because of it — drinks in the sales area, self-service — the glass door can earn back the extra consumption. In the storeroom behind the kitchen, where no one looks in, it does not pay off.
Reading the prices: net, gross, and two without a live offer
To keep the price column comparable, a word on origin. Most offers are gross prices from the linked catering retailers. Four come from B2B manufacturer shops and are net prices excl. VAT: the NordCap COOL-LINE RC 400 GL (775 € net, calculated around 922 € gross) and RCX 400 GL, and the KBS Ready KU 707 and KU 1407. We mark these as “netto” (net) and state the calculated gross value so that no phantom price arises.
For two devices, a citable German live offer is missing: the Polar G-Series G592 and the Gram ECO PLUS K 70. Both are fully recorded technically, only without a reliable day price — that is a gap in the price sources, not a statement about availability. The most expensive and at the same time largest device in the field is the Liebherr FRPSvg 1402 Performance (1,096 l, 5,143.18 € gross); the cheapest is the NordCap COOL-LINE RC 400 GL at the net price stated.
Electricity consumption: the datasheet factor
Electricity consumption is one factor among several, not the most important — but if you have two otherwise fitting devices in front of you, it can serve as a tiebreaker. It is stated on every Energielabel as an annual figure in kilowatt-hours. In the field this value ranges from around 180 kWh/a to 998 kWh/a (KBS Ready KU 1407, 922 l). The lower bound belongs to the two small NordCap COOL-LINE RC/RCX 400 GL (229 l, Klimaklasse 3, only up to 25 °C) — whose label figure fluctuates between 180 and 230 kWh/a (see below). The most economical fully tropics-capable device (Klimaklasse 5) is the NordCap KU 703 Premium at 299 kWh/a with 503 l. The upper value belongs to a twice-as-large two-door cabinet — a fair comparison reckons at similar net capacity. There the spread shows most clearly: the NordCap KU 703 (299 kWh/a, 503 l) and the Liebherr FRFCvg 6511 glass-door model (984 kWh/a, 478 l) hold practically the same. The difference of 685 kWh per year adds up to 6,850 kWh over ten years.
Over the operating life this remains a moderate item. Purely arithmetically, at 16 cents per kilowatt-hour:
- NordCap KU 703 Premium (299 kWh/a): around 480 € over ten years
- Liebherr FRFvg 5501 Performance (576 kWh/a): around 920 € over ten years
- Liebherr FRFCvg 6511 glass door (984 kWh/a): around 1,575 € over ten years
Between the most economical and the thirstiest device of the same size, that is around 1,100 € over ten years — and more at higher commercial electricity prices. It is real, but it rarely decides the purchase on its own: if you wish, enter your own electricity price and running time into the optional calculator below and see how much it comes to in your case.
Efficiency letter or kWh figure — what you really need to read
The energy-efficiency class (Energieeffizienzklasse, A to G) tempts you to take a shortcut, but it easily misleads. The letter is normalised to device size: it says how efficiently a cabinet cools per litre, not how much electricity it draws in absolute terms. For your calculation, the absolute annual value counts.
The dataset shows this. The NordCap KU 703 carries class A and consumes 299 kWh/a at 503 l. The Liebherr FRFCvg 6501 carries class C and consumes 635 kWh/a at 479 l — that is more than double, at slightly less net capacity. Conversely, there are class A devices with very different absolute consumption: the compact NordCap COOL-LINE RC 400 GL (229 l) sits at low values on the label, the larger Polar U-Series UA030 (490 l) at 351 kWh/a — both class A. Use the letter as rough orientation, but decide by the kWh figure.
An honest note on the two cheapest NordCap devices: for the COOL-LINE RC 400 GL and RCX 400 GL, the official Energielabel states 179.6 kWh/a, while the manufacturer’s website states 230 kWh/a. We carry the label value and flag the contradiction — the figure is only reliable once the manufacturer resolves it. Both devices also hold only 229 l and are Klimaklasse 3.
R290 and R600a: the refrigerant question, briefly explained
The devices listed here work throughout with natural refrigerants — R290 (propane) or R600a (isobutane). Neither is a fluorinated greenhouse gas; plug-and-play cabinets can be installed and commissioned with them without a refrigeration certificate. Both are flammable (safety class A3), and the fill quantities stay small at 60 to 120 g. In practice this means: anyone may install and plug in, but only certified specialists may open the refrigerant circuit (that is, a repair of the cooling system) — ChemKlimaschutzV, the German F-gas regulation. Observe the manufacturer’s ventilation and clearance notes — no further effort arises in everyday use.
Why there are (yet) no customer reviews here
Unlike with consumer technology, there are practically no public product reviews for commercial refrigerated storage cabinets. We reviewed Amazon, six catering retailers, two manufacturer shops and the Polar manufacturer pages — for none of the 15 devices is an aggregate rating available. These cabinets are sold through specialist trade and manufacturer distribution, not through review-heavy marketplaces. Stars on Google or Trustpilot rate the respective retailer, not the device, and would be misleading here. Squeezing a score out of a handful of unrelated ratings would help no one; the column stays open until product-level reviews with a verifiable source appear — then we add them with a date.
Frequently asked questions
What matters most when buying a commercial refrigerator?
The fit to your operation, not a single number. First, net capacity: is the volume enough for your throughput? The devices here hold 229 to 1,096 litres. Second, the Klimaklasse against your warmest installation site — in a hot kitchen it has to be class 4 or 5. Third, the door type: a glass door for presentation in the sales area, a solid door for storage. Only then compare price and equipment, and last of all electricity consumption — it is on every datasheet and makes a moderate difference over the operating life, which you can work out for your electricity price with the optional calculator below.
What does the Klimaklasse (climate class) mean — and which do I need?
The Klimaklasse states the highest ambient temperature for which the manufacturer guarantees cooling performance: class 3 up to 25 °C, class 4 up to 30 °C, class 5 up to 40 °C. What matters is your warmest operating hour at the installation site. In a kitchen next to a stove and fryer, 32 to 38 °C are reached — there a class 3 device (in the field the NordCap COOL-LINE RC/RCX 400 GL) is under-specified, however cheap. For hot kitchens, choose class 4 or, better, 5.
Glass door or solid door — which fits my operation?
A glass door makes the goods visible and sells — useful in the sales area and in self-service. But it insulates worse than an insulated solid door: in the identical Liebherr housing (747 × 769 × 2018 mm) the glass-door variant FRFCvg 6511 consumes 984 instead of 635 kWh/a of the solid-door FRFCvg 6501 — around 55 % more. For a pure storeroom behind the kitchen the solid door is therefore the right choice; in the field it is the standard anyway, with 14 of 15 devices.
Net or gross — which price am I seeing here?
Most prices in this comparison are gross prices including VAT. Four offers come from B2B manufacturer shops and are net prices excl. VAT — the NordCap COOL-LINE RC 400 GL and RCX 400 GL, and the KBS Ready KU 707 and KU 1407. These are marked "netto" (net), with the calculated gross value shown alongside. For two devices (Polar G-Series G592, Gram ECO PLUS K 70) no citable German live offer is available; that is not a statement about availability, but a gap in the price sources.
R290 or R600a — is the refrigerant a problem in operation?
No. R290 (propane) and R600a (isobutane) are natural refrigerants without fluorinated greenhouse gases; plug-and-play devices can be installed and operated with them without a refrigeration certificate. Both are flammable (safety class A3), and the fill quantities of the devices listed here lie between 60 and 120 g. Opening the refrigerant circuit during a repair remains certificate-bound (ChemKlimaschutzV, the German F-gas regulation). Observe the manufacturer's installation and ventilation notes.
Why do these devices carry no customer reviews?
In this market segment, public product reviews practically do not exist. We checked Amazon, six catering retailers, two manufacturer shops and the Polar manufacturer pages — nowhere are there aggregate ratings for these devices. Stars on Google or Trustpilot rate the retailer, not the individual device, and do not count here. As soon as robust product reviews appear, we will add them with source and date.

- Choose first by net capacity and Klimaklasse — that is, by whether the device fits your throughput and your installation site; sort by price, equipment and consumption only within the fitting candidates.
- A glass door only pays off where visibility of the goods drives sales — for the storeroom behind the kitchen the solid door is the right choice, and the usual one in the field anyway (14 of 15 devices).
- Check the Klimaklasse against your warmest operating hour: in a 35 °C kitchen, a Klimaklasse 3 device is the wrong choice, however cheap it is.
- Each price holds for the named retailer on the day we retrieved it; four entries are net B2B prices excl. VAT, and two devices appear without a German live price. None of that touches the technical values.
