Q: Bench drill, floor drill, pillar drill — what is the difference?

Less than the names suggest. "Bench drill" usually means the compact machine for the workbench, "floor" or "pillar drill" the tall version with its own base — but manufacturers use the terms inconsistently, sometimes for the same machine. What makes them comparable is not the name but three specifications: chuck capacity, spindle taper and speed control. Exactly those define the three classes of this comparison.

Q: Why does the spindle taper matter so much?

Because it decides the machine's future. Without a Morse taper, the chuck is either fixed or sits on a B16 arbor — with B16 you can at least swap the chuck, say for a precision keyless one. An MT2 or MT3 spindle additionally accepts the whole range of Morse-taper tooling: other chucks, direct holders, countersinks. Save €100 today on a machine without MT and you cannot upgrade later. That is why the column appears on every card here.

Q: How much steel drilling capacity do I actually need?

The manufacturer figure (13 to 20 mm in this field) names the largest recommended drill diameter in mild steel. For shelves, fittings and occasional metalwork, the compact class's 13 mm is enough; if you regularly drill 16 mm and up in steel or use hole saws, you need the torque reserves and low speeds of the mid-range or semi-pro class. Note: large diameters need low speeds — the bottom end of the speed range is the more honest number than motor wattage.

Q: Belt steps or stepless speed control — which is worth it?

Belt steps (5 to 12 in this field) are robust and cheap, but every change means: open the cover, move the belt. If you switch often between materials and diameters, vario or electronic control sets the speed at a dial — while the machine runs. Stepless starts around €260 here (Güde GTB 16/500 Vario) and combines with a Morse taper from roughly the €400 class up, which is our semi-pro criterion.

Q: What does runout tell you — and why is it missing almost everywhere?

Runout describes how precisely the spindle turns without wobble — the smaller, the cleaner the hole. Only 3 of 17 manufacturers publish a value at all (twice ≤ 0.02 mm, once 0.03 mm). The silence of the other 14 is information in itself: whoever promises precision without quantifying it cannot be held to it. We list published manufacturer figures only — no own measurements, no forum values — and otherwise write an honest "n/a".

Search for a bench drill press and you get a muddle of names: bench, floor and pillar drill often mean the same machine, and brochures happily compare 13-mm hobby tools with MT3 semi-professionals. This comparison sorts first: we classified 17 machines from Bosch, Scheppach, Einhell, Güde, Bernardo, Holzmann, Optimum and Proxxon by three hard, verifiable criteria — chuck capacity, spindle taper (Morse taper or B16) and type of speed control. The result: 6 compact, 6 mid-range and 5 semi-pro machines with steel drilling capacities of 13 to 20 mm and live prices from €124.95 (Einhell TC-BD 350) to €758 (Holzmann SB 163VH). The column nobody else prints: the spindle taper. It decides whether you can later fit a better chuck or Morse-taper tooling — or are stuck with the factory chuck. The class rating is our own normalisation (marked "derived"); every factual figure comes from manufacturer documents with source and retrieval date.

The compatibility column: MT2 spindles make up the mid-range (incl. Scheppach DP55 and the Güde series), one MT3 leads the field (Optimum B 17PRO), B16 arbors mark the limit of the compact class. For one machine (Güde GSB 20/812) the manufacturer's own documents contradict each other (MT2 vs MT3) — it is labelled as exactly that until Güde resolves it.
Runout: only 3 of 17 manufacturers publish a figure at all (Optimum ≤ 0.02 mm, Güde Vario ≤ 0.02 mm, Bernardo 0.03 mm). That is a finding in itself — we list published manufacturer values only, no forum measurements, and "n/a" stays "n/a".
Speed control separates the workshop worlds: belt steps (5 to 12, moved by hand) versus vario/electronic (stepless at a dial). Stepless plus Morse taper is our semi-pro criterion — starting around €400 in this field.

Three classes instead of a name muddle: the normalisation, published

Our classification follows three hard criteria anyone can verify on the data sheet. Compact/hobby: chuck up to 13 mm and no Morse-taper spindle — a B16 arbor alone does not lift a machine into the mid-range; the chuck capacity decides. Mid-range: 16-mm chuck and/or MT2 spindle, speed via belt steps. Semi-pro: MT2 or MT3 spindle and stepless speed control. This rating is our own normalisation — marked “derived” in the table, not a manufacturer claim. The field splits into 6 compacts, 6 mid-range machines and 5 semi-pros.

The column nobody else prints: MT and B16

Two machines with “16 mm capacity” can be entirely different tools: one carries its chuck on a B16 arbor (at least swappable), the other has a true MT2 spindle that also accepts direct holders and countersinks. In this field, MT2 spindles make up the whole mid-range, the Optimum B 17PRO leads with MT3, and among the compacts “no Morse taper” marks the upgrade limit. One case stays open: for the Güde GSB 20/812 the manufacturer’s documents state both MT2 and MT3 — the contradiction is shown as exactly that until Güde resolves it. We will not invent the answer.

Prices: €124.95 to €758 — and six honest gaps

Eleven machines carry a price from an offer linked and in stock on 17 July 2026; the span runs from €124.95 (Einhell TC-BD 350, compact class) to €758 (Holzmann SB 163VH, semi-pro). Six machines are listed without a price: no verifiable live offer was found, and we never adopt aggregator prices. Motor ratings deserve a second look: some manufacturers quote S2 short-duty figures — full power for minutes, not continuous. The bare wattage is therefore the least reliable line of the data sheet.

Runout: 14 of 17 manufacturers stay silent

Runout would be the precision metric of this machine class — it is rarely published. Optimum (≤ 0.02 mm), Güde for its Vario model (≤ 0.02 mm) and Bernardo (0.03 mm) commit to figures; the other 14 data sheets name none. We show only these published manufacturer specifications. Individual buyers’ forum measurements are no basis for comparison — methods and instruments differ too much. The majority’s silence is documented as what it is: an “n/a” in the table, and a hint as to who lets themselves be pinned down and who does not.

Workplace safety: a footnote with a source

For commercial use of pillar and bench drills, the German DGUV rule 109-607 (metal construction, section 3.2.3) sets requirements — from workpiece clamping to the ban on gloves at rotating tools. We deliberately give no safety instructions of our own; the binding requirements are with the original: the DGUV information “Sicheres Bohren” and DGUV rule 109-607.

Frequently asked questions

Bench drill, floor drill, pillar drill — what is the difference?

Less than the names suggest. "Bench drill" usually means the compact machine for the workbench, "floor" or "pillar drill" the tall version with its own base — but manufacturers use the terms inconsistently, sometimes for the same machine. What makes them comparable is not the name but three specifications: chuck capacity, spindle taper and speed control. Exactly those define the three classes of this comparison.

Why does the spindle taper matter so much?

Because it decides the machine's future. Without a Morse taper, the chuck is either fixed or sits on a B16 arbor — with B16 you can at least swap the chuck, say for a precision keyless one. An MT2 or MT3 spindle additionally accepts the whole range of Morse-taper tooling: other chucks, direct holders, countersinks. Save €100 today on a machine without MT and you cannot upgrade later. That is why the column appears on every card here.

How much steel drilling capacity do I actually need?

The manufacturer figure (13 to 20 mm in this field) names the largest recommended drill diameter in mild steel. For shelves, fittings and occasional metalwork, the compact class's 13 mm is enough; if you regularly drill 16 mm and up in steel or use hole saws, you need the torque reserves and low speeds of the mid-range or semi-pro class. Note: large diameters need low speeds — the bottom end of the speed range is the more honest number than motor wattage.

Belt steps or stepless speed control — which is worth it?

Belt steps (5 to 12 in this field) are robust and cheap, but every change means: open the cover, move the belt. If you switch often between materials and diameters, vario or electronic control sets the speed at a dial — while the machine runs. Stepless starts around €260 here (Güde GTB 16/500 Vario) and combines with a Morse taper from roughly the €400 class up, which is our semi-pro criterion.

What does runout tell you — and why is it missing almost everywhere?

Runout describes how precisely the spindle turns without wobble — the smaller, the cleaner the hole. Only 3 of 17 manufacturers publish a value at all (twice ≤ 0.02 mm, once 0.03 mm). The silence of the other 14 is information in itself: whoever promises precision without quantifying it cannot be held to it. We list published manufacturer figures only — no own measurements, no forum values — and otherwise write an honest "n/a".

Buy the class, not the machine: only once you know whether 13-mm compact, 16-mm mid-range or MT semi-pro fits your workpieces is a price comparison within the class meaningful.
Check the spindle taper before buying: a B16 arbor lets you swap the chuck later, an MT2/MT3 spindle also takes holders and countersinks — a permanently fitted chuck allows neither.
